Bobble Babble: Dave Winfield was the first true superstar in San Diego Padres history; a five-tool player who brought power, speed, defense, and swagger to a young franchise that desperately needed an identity. The Padres selected Winfield with the 4th overall pick in the 1973 MLB Draft out of the University of Minnesota, where he was a multi-sport star in baseball and basketball (and even drafted by NBA and NFL teams). Remarkably, Winfield jumped straight from college to the Major Leagues without a single game in the minors. In the late 1970s he blossomed into one of the National League’s elite players. He was a four-time Gold Glove winner and two-time Silver Slugger during his San Diego tenure. He was known for his athleticism, intensity, and leadership on a young team still finding its footing. The 2003 Winfield bobblehead came in a white home uniform, but there was a brown uniform variant as well (though it was less frequent). There also appears to be some versions with the sponsor listed as US Bank, though the primary sponsor was Cox Communications.
