Bobble Babble: Jake Peavy debuted with the Padres in June 2002 at age 21 and quickly established himself as a front-line starter. He had a bulldog mentality, attacking hitters with a mid-90s fastball, sharp slider, and biting changeup. In 2004 Peavy broke out with a 2.27 ERA, the best in the National League, and was the NL ERA champion despite missing some time with injuries. The following year the Padres presented him as an SGA as a bobblehead in a racecar. Why is he in a car, you might ask. Well, possibly because Nextel was the title sponsor of NASCAR’s top series at the time (the Nextel Cup), so likely a Nextel-sponsored “race car” bobblehead fits as a sponsor tie-in. And to make your Jake Peavy playtime just a little bit more fun, the racecar has a button on the back that makes the care produce an audible “vroom, vroooom!” Super-exciting stuff.
