Bobble Babble: After taking an extended bobblehead giveaway break, the San Diego Padres came back with a series of five new ones in 2010. David Eckstein was up first. Eckstein played for the Padres from 2009 to 2010, serving primarily as the team’s starting second baseman. He joined the Padres late in his career, bringing veteran leadership and playoff experience. Eckstein retired after the 2010 season, ending a 10-year major league career that included time with the Angels, Cardinals, Blue Jays, and Padres. This bobblehead (as well as the rest of the 2010 series) comes with a cardboard backer card that features a photo of the athlete on the field and a printed signature. This set also took the Padres’ bobbleheads of the antiquated “parade rest” position that they had generally employed, and into more action-oriented poses. Finally, it is worth noting that the Friars had a bit of a bumpy start into the world of bobblehead SGAs. Their first giveaway was in 2001, but then they largely did legacy players and mini-sets for the next decade. It was only in 2010 that they really tried to jump into the pool. This Eckstein offering holds the lowest attendance of any Padres bobblehead giveaway in history with 17,673, but it only went up from there.
