Bobble Babble: The “Swingin’ Friar” is the official mascot of the San Diego Padres, and he’s one of the most recognizable and long-standing symbols in Major League Baseball. The Swingin’ Friar was first introduced in 1958, when the Padres were still a minor league team in the Pacific Coast League. The name “Padres” (Spanish for “fathers”) was chosen to honor the Franciscan friars who founded San Diego in the 18th century, and the mascot embodies that theme. The Friar is a cartoonish, robed monk with a tonsure haircut, sandals, and a wide grin. He’s typically shown swinging a baseball bat, which is where the “Swingin’” part comes from. When San Diego got its MLB team in 1969, the Friar carried over as the team’s symbol. He’s appeared on uniforms, merchandise, as a live costumed mascot at games… and, fittingly, was even honored as the first Padres bobblehead stadium giveaway.
