Bobble Babble: The Walt Disney Company’s ownership of the Angels is a short but very influential chapter in franchise history. Disney took management control in 1996 and completed full ownership after Gene Autry’s death in 1998. When Disney Sports Enterprises became the Managing General Partner of the team in 1996, this is when the California Angels became the Anaheim Angels. Disney took the team from being geotagged with a generic state-wide location, to hyper-focusing on Anaheim (by no coincidence, also the location of Disneyland). Disney invested a butt-load of money into the stadium and preceded their ownership with movies like Angels in the Outfield, but, ultimately, they sold the team to Arte Moreno in May 2003. It is absolutely notable that the Angels won their only World Series under the management of Disney. Moreno would end up pivoting and transitioning the name of the team to the Los Angeles Angels, which is stupid because they are in Orange County. Oh, and this Micky Mouse bobblehead was released on August 4th, 2024, which Disney fans refer to as “D23 Day”. I guess you can look D23 up if you’re interested.
